The Church at the Heart of the Island – Newport Minster Photographic Competition

in Association with the Isle of Wight Photographer of the Year

Registration

  • Before uploading Images to the Newport Minster Competition all entrants, after reading the competition rules, must register and submit their details using the Registration Form.  Organisers will attempt to respond to the registration request, within 72 hours, once your registration and residency of the Isle of Wight has been verified. You will then be supplied with a password and login details. After registration you may use the same login details for all categories in the 2009 IWPOY competition.
  • Please ensure that your email address and phone number are up to date, in case we need to contact you during or at the end of the competition.
  • The competition is open to all Isle of Wight resident photographers (amateur or professional) ONLY and there are no age restrictions.
  • Under 16 year olds must have the permission from their parents to enter the competition.
  • By registering and uploading your images you demonstrate your acceptance of the competition rules.

Images

Newport Minster: ‘Church at the Heart of the Island’ is a themed competition and will be a new category for IWPOY 2009.

The judges will be looking for interior or exterior shots, events and people or any subject that you as a photographer and Islander consider best depicts the unique character of Newport Minster as the ‘Church at the Heart of the Island’.

  • This is a free to enter competition starting 15th April 2009 and there is no limit on the number of photographs an entrant may submit. ALL images must relate to the Newport Minster theme and be entered before the closing date of the competition 27th May 2009. The copyright of all images including individual images making-up a composite image must belong to the photographer. An image may be entered into any of the other IWPOY 2009 categories providing it meets all of the competition and category criteria.
  • Images must be colour only for this category. Images may not contain text (i.e. photographer’s name or image title).
  • Images taken with digital media and scanned film images are acceptable but must meet the image size requirements as stated below.
  • Images that have previously won any other competition will not be acceptable.
  • Three sizes of each respective image in jpeg format will be required: one for uploading to the Online Competition Gallery a max of 500 pixels at longest side @72ppi and not exceeding a max of 60kb file size, an Image of 1024×768 pixels max 1mb to be retained by the entrant which may be required if the image is short-listed for the IWPOY Awards Evening viewing in Nov/Dec 2009 and a further hi-res image that can be printed to a minimum of 12″ x 8″ @300ppi if required for the 50 short-listed exhibition entries in this category. Note: larger images selected for printing are preferred in uncompressed Tiff format.

Closing Date

The closing date for entries will be midnight the 27th May 2009 and the winning entries and runners-up will be published on the Campaign’s new website, in the Isle of Wight County Press and featured on the Isle of Wight Photographer of the Year main website. All 50 short-listed entries will be displayed at a special ‘Church at the Heart of the Island’ exhibition in Newport Minster in June, July and August 2009. Short listed prints will be provided at no cost to the photographer. The winning photographers will also be invited to attend the Final Awards presentation evening of the Isle of Wight Photographer of the Year 2009 in November at the Quay Arts Centre Newport.

Prizes

Prizes will be awarded in 2 age Groups: Adults and Under 16. The first place winning entry, including the photographer’s name and copyright, will be featured prominently in the forthcoming new brochure and new website for the Newport Minster Renewal Campaign. The winner of the Adult Group will also be awarded a framed and mounted exhibition print of the winning entry. Two runner-up prizes of £25.00 vouchers from Island Photo Centre will also be awarded in this Group.

The Under 16 year old winner will receive a one-day assignment with an IW County Press photographer with the chance of having their images published. Two runner-up prizes of £25.00 vouchers from Island Photo Centre will also be awarded in this Group.

Judging

The judging of the ‘Church at the Heart of the Island’ category will take place shortly after the closing date. Three independent judges will be appointed to undertake the judging of this category and their details will be announced on the main IWPOY website when available.

Donations

The ‘Friends of Newport Minster’ would greatly appreciate any donations that competition entrants and friends may like to make in support of the Newport Minster Renewal fund. Copyright & Liability

  • Each entrant must be the sole author and owner of copyright in all pictures entered. It is the legal responsibility of the entrant, and not the organisers, to ensure they comply with these ownership and copyright requirements and own the rights to reproduce their images. The copyright will remain with the photographer. Images that are discovered not to fulfil these criteria will be deemed ineligible and disqualified.
  • Images are uploaded at the entrant’s risk and the organisers regret that they cannot accept any liability for the unauthorised duplication or use of images submitted to the website. It will be the entrant’s responsibility to ensure that the images submitted are bonafide.
  • Copyright remains with the photographer at all times. By entering the competition you agree that your photographs may be used by the ‘Friends of Newport Minister’ in promotional material used for the benefit of Newport Minster for a period of two years after the close of the competition. You also agree that IWPOY may use an image in promotion of the IWPOY and its sub-competitions and categories for up to two years after the close of the IWPOY competition.

The organisers retain the right to remove images if they are judged not to be in keeping with the spirit of the competition or are deemed to be of an inappropriate nature. It is the entrant’s responsibility to ensure that images are submitted correctly. Conduct not in keeping with the spirit of this competition, multiple single-user registrations, the use of false names and/or addresses will result in disqualification from receiving an IWPOY award and taking part in all future Isle of Wight Photographer of the Year events. By registering you agree that your details and images may be used for other promotions relating to this competition.

By registration and uploading images into the Newport Minster category or any of the other IWPOY competition galleries/categories all entrants demonstrate their acceptance of the competition rules for this category and for Isle of Wight Photographer of the Year (IWPOY).
