We are very pleased that Rachel Flynn has agreed to be one of the Judges for this year’s Isle of Wight Photographer of the Year  competition, bringing with her new skills and expertise thaRachel Flynnt will ensure the success of the IWPOY exhibitions running throughout 2014.

Rachel Flynn was born and brought up on the Isle of Wight before leaving to study Art History at the University of Bristol. In 2008 she completed a Masters course gaining a distinction for her study of the Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron and in 2012 went on to complete a PhD which examined the life and work of British artist Graham Sutherland.

She has curated a range of exhibitions for National Museum Wales where she was employed as Assistant Curator of Historic Art, has a number of publications and a forthcoming book on Sutherland (Autumn 2014) and has delivered talks and teaching across the UK at venues including Tate Britain and Modern Art Oxford. In Spring 2013 she returned to the Island, taking up the position of  Exhibitions and Collections Coordinator at Dimbola Museum and Galleries.

David BettsWe have great pleasure in welcoming back David Betts as one of the three judges for the 2013 IWPOY competition. David has been working in  photography, on the Island and South Coast for over 30 years and gained a reputation as one of the Island’s foremost Wedding and Portrait photographers.

In the past David was a member of a local photographic society where he worked mainly in black and white, he gives talks about photography and judges club competitions from time to time. At present he and his partner Heather are involved in wedding photography but they are always on the look-out for new projects.

David has been published in various photographic magazines and in his own book ‘Island Maidens’. Earlier in his career he produced several calendars showing both his skill in photographing the ‘female form’ and local landscapes of the Isle of Wight.

We are very pleased to announce Christian Warren (Style of Wight Magazine) as our final judge for the 2013 competition. Christian worked as a professional in the photographic and design industry for nearly 20 years. From the age of 17 he trained for 4 years in a commercial studio environment. Working initially in processes and developing skills of a colour darkroom, colour hand printing, developing films and Christian Warrentransparencies. It was here he earned his ‘LMPA’ Then moving into the studio as assistant to the chief photographer.

He then worked for major high street chains as a packaging photographer; clients included John Lewis, Laura Ashley, Asda, BQ and the agency in house brand. Work varied from lifestyle and conceptual imagery to pack shots and product photography, but was always closely tied into product development and trend forecasting.

After a 3 year spell working self-employed for various clients, commercial and private Christian set up a Lifestyle magazine on the Isle of Wight. Style of Wight is a high end visually design led lifestyle publication. His role is still heavily focused on design and photography; but more as a creative director. This role has seen his style fully develop and he has gained a wealth of experience and expertise across most if not all of the photographic disciplines from food and fashion to weddings and reportage.
